Taranaki artist Milarky has painted a diver on the Escape Coffee building in central New Plymouth.

New Plymouth’s newest mural is certainly deep.

How deep? Even the artist behind the giant diver on Escape Coffee’s wall isn’t sure – yet.

Taranaki-based artist Milarky was approached by Escape Coffee to liven up the building, and chose the wall facing Liardet St.

Milarky has spent three days working on the wall art.

Milarky has spent three days working on the wall art.

“I said to do this side because it’d be a good challenge with the windows,” he said.

“I quite like the shape of this wall.”

He started painting on Saturday, using a roller and touches of spray paint, and reckoned by the time he’d finished on Monday evening he’d have used between five and 10 litres.

The art was finished by Monday evening.

The art was finished by Monday evening.

He was still figuring out the meaning behind the piece, but said it was deeper than just a diver on a shop wall.

“It’s something that I draw a lot but I haven’t painted on a wall.

“I usually don’t figure out the essay behind it until afterwards.”
