Delays could afflict motorists on arterial routes around Auckland overnight and next week, as maintenance work coincides with a rebound in economic activity.
People driving to Auckland from Northland might experience delays on Sunday night and Monday morning.
Traffic was slow on State Highway 1 near Sheepworld in Dome Valley on Sunday about 9.30pm, with only one highway lane reportedly open.
A motorist said a “huge hole” was dug in the road’s northbound lane on Sunday night.
“Many men were inside it.”
The New Zealand Transport Agency said roadworks were being carried out on SH1 from Wellsford to Warkworth.
The NZTA on its website warned that due to road works in the area, stop-go traffic management and speed restrictions would be in place, but only at night.
The roadworks are expected to wrap up by 5am Friday.
Road maintenance on SH16 Waimauku to Kumeu was also happening, but that project was expected to run for much longer, until August 14.
This weekend was the first under New Zealand’s new Alert Level 1 coronavirus pandemic system.
Under Level 1, restrictions on domestic travel have been lifted.
Multiple other maintenance projects were underway on highways in and around Auckland until June 19.
The NZTA said if bad weather delayed any projects, work would be completed on the next available date before Friday.
