A flying wheel damaged a car roof, smashed the windshield and bent the steering wheel of a westbound vehicle on the Queensway on Friday morning, but amazingly, the driver received only minor injuries.

The mishap occurred at about 8 a.m., near the Parkdale Avenue exit, when the wheel flew off an eastbound vehicle and bounced over the median and into oncoming traffic, the Ontario Provincial Police said in a media release. The wheel then struck a westbound vehicle driven by a 36-year-old Ottawa man, who was taken to hospital by ambulance.

The 46-year-old driver of the now three-wheeled vehicle said he had recently been doing his own brake work on the car.

He was charged with operating an unsafe vehicle.
